Beacon Mtn
Beacon, NY
The Trail -
Beacon Mtn is the north end of the Hudson Highlands State park. The trails in this area are very technical and steep at sections with lots of rocks and some small scrambles. You can start via the parking lot at the base of the mountain or approach the fire tower from the south on foot via the Breakneck trail. The white and yellow trails around Beacon Mtn are along ridges with beautiful views.
TWBK’s favorite climbing workout follows the “Casino Trail” up to the fire tower for summit repeats of Beacon Mountain. Each repeat follows the red trail to the white trail 2 miles up and 2 miles down for a total of 4 miles and 1300ft of elevation gain and loss. This is not an easy trail workout, the grade of the mountain is very steep and the trails are quite technical.
Transportation -
To get there take the Metro North train to Beacon from Grand Central. Once in Beacon, the trail head it is a short 2 mile run or you can take a car there. There is a small parking lot at the trail head if you are driving there.
The Town -
Beacon is home to many restaurants and breweries for post run food and beers. Our favorite is Quinn’s, which has delicious ramen and a great beer selection or Dogwood which has a super casual pub vibe.
Tips:
*You can climb to the top of the Fire Tower at the summit of the mountain for incredible views of the Hudson River and if you get a clear day you can sometimes see the Manhattan skyline!
*There is a deli right across the street from the trail head in case you forget water or snacks!
*The Beacon Reservoir is accessible via an access road off of the Casino Trail. We won’t tell you exactly how to get there, but if you can figure it out, it is a super enjoyable post run stop in the summer time!
