South Mtn Reservation

Millburn, NJ

Transportation - One of the great things about this trail is that it is super accessible by NJ transit - the trail head is right across the street from the Millburn train station. The train from Penn Station to Millburn is only about 45 minutes. If you are driving you can park at the Locust Grove Parking Lot or at the South Mtn Reservation Dog Park.

The Trail - The route we normally run as a group is a 10 mile loop with over 1000ft elevation gain per loop. The trail varies from gravel to dirt to technical rocky trails with a few big climbs and a big technical decent.  Hemlock Falls is a great stop along the trail - its especially large after rain storms and freezes over beautifully in the winter. The route can be found here. There are a variety of other trails within the system, including many carriage trails which are great for beginners. The Lenape Trail also passes through and you can pick it up right off of the Locust grove parking lot by following the yellow blazes.

The Town: Millburn has a bunch of local spots to grab after trail snacks that are all walkable from the trail head. Our favorite is Liv Breads, just a short walk from the trail head.

TIPS:

*There is a water fountain at the entrance of the dog park. Perfect for bottle refills and staying hydrated in the summertime, although it is turned off in the winter, FYI.

*South Mtn is very accessible in the winter time but trail shoes are generally recommended for the colder months because it can get icy!

*This trail is home to the NJ Trail Series race called the Febapple Frozen 50 and offers distances from 10mi to 50mi.
